It was supposed to be a simple trip. I had taken the same route many times before, and everything felt routine. I arrived at the airport early, checked in without any issues, and sat near the gate waiting for boarding to begin.
When they finally called our flight, people started lining up. I grabbed my bag and stood up, ready to board like everyone else. That’s when my phone rang.
It was my mother.
I almost didn’t answer. I figured I could call her back later, but something made me pick up. Her voice sounded different—uneasy, almost nervous. She asked me to wait a moment before boarding, saying she had a strange feeling she couldn’t explain.
I tried to reassure her. I told her everything was fine and that I would call her once I landed. But she insisted, asking me to stay on the phone just a little longer.
So I stepped aside.
We talked about simple things, nothing important. I kept watching the line move forward while I stayed where I was. A few minutes passed, and before I realized it, the gate had closed.
I had missed my flight.
At first, I was frustrated. I blamed myself for waiting and thought about how inconvenient everything had just become. Missing that flight felt like a mistake.
But a short while later, something changed.
An announcement came over the speakers. The flight I was supposed to be on had encountered a serious problem shortly after takeoff. There were no details yet, only that something had gone wrong.
I felt a chill run through my body.
That could have been me on that plane.
I sat there in silence, trying to process what had just happened. The frustration I felt earlier disappeared completely, replaced by something else—something deeper.
I called my mother again. When she answered, her voice was calm this time. Before I could say anything, she simply said, “I knew you shouldn’t get on that flight.”
That moment stayed with me.
Since then, I’ve learned to see things differently. Not every delay is a problem. Not every missed opportunity is a loss.
Sometimes, what feels like bad timing… is actually protection.
